The Greater Garden Route

About The Greater Garden Route

The Greater Garden Route was created to shine a light on a coastline that often slips between the maps. Too many travellers rush past Jeffreys Bay, St Francis, and the Kouga valleys on their way to the “Garden Route” or Addo — missing the wild beauty, the small-town stories, and the people who give this region its heart.

This platform exists to connect visitors with those hidden corners while giving locals a space to share their voices and ideas. It’s part travel guide, part storytelling project, and part community noticeboard.

Our Story
The idea began with one simple realisation: this coast is more connected than people think. The waves of Jeffreys Bay roll into the same valleys that grow Hankey’s oranges. The same farmers who watch over the land also surf at sunrise or guide hikers through fynbos-covered hills. We built The Greater Garden Route to tell those stories — not from offices in big cities, but from porches, farm stalls, and forest trails. Every photo, paragraph, and listing here comes from people who live the landscape daily.
Why The Greater Garden Route Exists
Our goal is to bring together the coast and countryside — the surf, the soil, and the stories that define the Eastern Cape. We want visitors to travel more slowly, meet local makers, and support small businesses that keep these towns alive. It’s more than a directory; it’s a living map of connection — linking travellers, locals, and communities that deserve to be seen.
What Makes The Greater Garden Route Special
Stretching from the surf of J-Bay to the citrus orchards of Hankey and the forests around Loerie, this region is full of contrast and character. You can ride waves in the morning, sip farm wine by sunset, and wake the next day to birdsong in the hills. Here, the wild coast meets farming valleys, and time still follows nature’s rhythm. The beauty of Kouga isn’t just the scenery — it’s how life and land still move together.
Who’s Behind It
We’re a small team of writers, photographers, designers, and community partners who call this coastline home. Some of us surf, others farm, some craft stories from behind a camera — but all share the same love for this region. We tell real stories from real places, working alongside the people who live them. That’s why the content you’ll find here feels lived-in — because it is.
